Do You Need a Permit or Zoning Approval to Place a Container in Indiana?

Short answer: generally, no. Storage and office containers are temporary, portable structures, not permanent buildings, so permits generally aren’t required to place one on a commercial jobsite or facility in Indiana. For sizing, pricing, and where we deliver, see Container Rentals Indiana.

Why Permits Generally Aren’t Required

A container sits on the ground. There’s no foundation, no footings, no permanent utility tie-in, and nothing bolted into your property. It arrives on a truck, gets set where you want it, and leaves the same way when the job wraps. Permitting is written mostly around permanent construction, which is why a portable container typically falls outside it.

For what it’s worth, we’ve never run into a permit issue with a customer. That’s our experience, not a guarantee about your specific address, and this isn’t legal advice.

Are there any specific permits or zoning requirements I need to know about before placing a container on my property in Indiana?

Generally no. Because the container is temporary and portable, it isn’t treated like new construction.

Do you need a permit to put a CONEX box on your property?

A conex box is the same temporary, portable container, so the answer doesn’t change: generally no.

Who’s Responsible for Checking Local Rules

Bolted Box isn’t responsible for checking local permit or zoning requirements; that’s up to the customer. If you’re unsure, one quick call to your city or county planning office settles it. Separately, if you don’t own the site, getting the property owner’s or landlord’s approval for the placement is your step too.

Are there any permits or zoning restrictions I need to check with my local Indiana municipality before placing a container on my property?

Only if you want to confirm it. That call to your local planning office is the fastest way.

What are the zoning regulations and permit requirements I need to know before placing a shipping container on my property in Indianapolis?

The same answer applies in Indianapolis as anywhere else in the state.

Are there any local zoning or permit requirements I should be aware of before renting a container office in Lafayette?

Office containers are temporary, portable structures too, so the same answer applies. See our Lafayette container rental page for rates and delivery.

How long can I keep a rental container on my property, and are there any local zoning restrictions I should be aware of?

There’s no minimum rental term, so you keep the container as long as the job needs it, billed per 28-day cycle.

What Actually Matters for a Smooth Delivery

In practice, site access matters far more than paperwork. Containers arrive on our own tilt-bed trucks and slide off, so there’s no crane or forklift involved. Here’s what the driver needs:

  • At least 100 feet of straight-line backing room for a 40 ft, or about 80 feet for a 20 ft (a 20 ft can go in roughly 50 feet with our integrated tow-style truck at a higher delivery price)
  • About 14 feet of overhead clearance along the approach, and up to 16 feet at the drop point
  • Firm, level, well-drained ground
  • Door direction decided before delivery

If the ground won’t hold up, we can build a compacted rock pad. The full checklist is on our delivery requirements page. Quotes go out the same day, and once you accept, we schedule delivery as soon as possible and confirm the date with you. See our storage container rentals and office containers.
